The group exhibition is a cooperation of current and alumni artists of the Art Site of Railway Warehouse. The artists reflect upon contemporary challenges they encounter while the worldwide pandemic has changed all inertia and habits. It has directly and indirectly influenced everyones’ lives, especially by creating distance between the individuals.
The theme of the exhibition refers to a geological term, seismic site effects, which are related to the amplification of waves in geological layers. Studying local site effects is important as it helps us understand the soil’s response and motion at the ground surface due to an earthquake. Likewise, visitors to the Art Site know that there are actually constant perceptible resonances on the floor surface caused by the passing trains, accompanied with acoustic vibrations.
The sound of the title can also easily be connected with the term side effects, which are additional risks or negative effects that must be accepted in order to receive a benefit. This meaning evokes the shadow of our time, the pandemic, the vaccination, and many other life changing incalculable effects of COVID-19. However, when the side effects are directed at an epidemic, such a term becomes reversed. It can be said that because of the epidemic, human beings have begun to rethink the value of their existence. In this state, artists have also begun to think about other relationships between their own creation and the environment.
We can say that the epidemic was like a big earthquake that shook everyone out of the way and widened physical distance, but through this situation, forcing us to confront and reflect on all that we are doing, it showed how close people are to each other spiritually. Through reflection, we have the opportunity to know what is truly valuable and beneficial, which unites people.
The exhibition does not solely focus on COVID-19, but aims to reconnect the separated individuals. Artists from various media, from different lands and cultures share their experience. When the floor literally shakes under them, carrying the symbolic meaning of the reality of the outside world, they transform these seismic effects into creative directions. The artworks are offering some kind of solutions and relief, if making and enjoying art is not enough for one.
