Richard Müller’s exhibition 匯聚空間/Convergent Space is an exploration of the material and social systems that connect individuals within the urban landscape of Hsinchu. 匯聚空間/Convergent Space uses a wide variety of media, such as sculpture, video, and painting, to consider the everyday ways residents shape the city.Central to Müller’s work is the notion that cities are complex systems containing a mosaic of formal and informal practices that both contrast and overlap.
The exhibition has been designed in two parts to consider this relationship. Part 1 uses a visual language inspired by the material and concrete logic of the official city. Electrical cables, concrete masonry units and aluminum siding become items upon which complex systems emerge and grow. Part 2 uses four sites: a riverside garden, a temple, a rooftop and a market, as spaces to discuss the differing ways cities are used unofficially. Color profiles have been developed from each location to produce four ‘Glitch’ paintings. The ‘Glitch’ series is guided by the aesthetics of ceramic tiles and camouflage patterns to consider how such unofficial practices often “hide within plain sight”.
Richard uses a variety of methods and methodologies to investigate the theme of ‘insurgent spatial practices’. These investigations seek to analyse and account for non-linear and often unsanctioned approaches individuals and communities transform urban landscapes.
Richard positions this investigation of ‘insurgent spatial practices’ at the junction of theory, art-making and lived experience. The output of this often takes the form of sculpture, conversations, writing, photography and drawing.
Please feel free to contact me at any point in person or via email. I’m always happy to talk!
