Tamas SZVET

Born in 1982 in Szarvas, Hungary, Szvet studied in Budapest, and in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He received his Doctorate in Liberal Arts from the Hungarian University of Fine Arts in 2018. He is living and working in Hsinchu, Taiwan.
Szvet is fascinated by visual perception and ways of seeing. His artistic research wants to challenge what we think our vision’s boundaries are and the ways we can push those boundaries down and see the world with fresh eyes. He combines traditional techniques with new media applications: his sculptures and installations use both natural materials such as wood, bamboo, or metal, and the ephemeral — light, shadow, projection, reflection and virtual reality. His intention is to create site-specific artworks which surround the viewer and ultimately enhance his or her interaction or engagement with the particular space and locale. He believes that the role of the artist is to foster a continual exploration, transforming each viewer into an artist.

藝術家駐村回饋:
I have spent a yearlong art program in the Hsinchu City Art Site of Railway Warehouse in 2021 in Studio Nr.3. My activity contained participation, and the organization of a group exhibition (Site Effect, 2021 Jun.), and a solo exhibition (Art Gym, 2021 Oct). Despite the Covid19 restrictions, I was able to collaborate with some neighbors of the district, and give an Artist Talk connected to my exhibition.
Following my proposed plan, my work was professionally supported by the Art Village Team, who helped in my artistic research in many ways, such as introducing me to art professionals and local artists, buying materials, organizing a group, and solo exhibition, and documenting and publishing my art activity. The location and the lengths of the program gave me the chance to work undisturbed, focused, and with enough time to create a series of artworks, eight rather big scale metal work inspirited by the locatin, and the conditions.
The Art Village is truly a well-organized institute, where the local artists met with the public. Families and individuals regularly visited my studio, giving me feedback, and cultural support. My artwork - made in 2021 - therefore cannot be produced elsewhere. With the inspiration of the Art Village, I was able to develop myself and my art to a higher level, due to the given time, resources, and the never-tired staff, whom I became one family. I believe the Art Program and Events, organized by the Art Village are a great contribution to the community and society. I am truly grateful to the staff of the Art Village, and the City for the wonderful opportunity to spend a year in the old warehouse.
